Why the Patriots will be ok without Tom Brady

It's been a topic of debate around New England since Roger Goodell and the NFL decided to try and make an "example" out of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. On January 18th 2015 the New England Patriots destroyed the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 in the AFC championship. It sent Brady and the Patriots to Super Bowl 49 against the Seattle Seahawks. It was only until the days following the game that we found out some of the Patriots balls had been a little under inflated. The days following the game reports started coming out that the patriots had been caught in a sting operation run by the NFL. On January 20th Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported that 11 of the 12 balls were 2 PSI under inflated. Thanks to the Wells report we now know that report was completely false. The Patriots went onto win the Superbowl thanks to catch for the ages by rookie cornerback Malcolm Butler.

It was the fourth Super Bowl victory during the Belichick-Brady era and one that all Patriots fans thought would put an end to all of the questions surrounding deflated balls. But the NFL started a 544 days’ investigation into what was deemed as deflate gate. After following all of the coverage last summer up until judge Richard M. Berman's verdict. We all thought that maybe just maybe Rodger Goodell would put deflate gate to rest. After a season where we saw the offensive line crumble around Brady and destroy the Patriots chances at getting back to the Super bowl. Things were just getting started with the second circuit court of appeals in the Brady case. It didn't look good from the outset and the courts decided to uphold the four games and back Goodell's power.

When Brady decided on July 15th 2016 to drop his appeal and not go to the supreme court it sent all of New England into a frenzy. Jimmy Garoppolo was thrown into the role of starting quarterback of the Patriots. We have seen very little of Jimmy G since he became the back up for Tom Brady. Garoppolo has shown himself to a mobile quarterback, getting yards with his feet just a much as he can in the arm. There a lot of questions surrounding what kind of quarterback he will be with four games to work with. But Jimmy will have a lot of help as long as the Patriots supporting cast can stay deathly.

With weapons like Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett at tight end, and Julian Edelman at wide receiver. Jimmy G should have a plethora of targets to throw to during the first four games of the season. The Patriots should be able to survive the first four games without Brady, and should give Brady enough rest for the remainder of the season. It'll be a tough four weeks without Brady, but the Patriots have more than enough talent on their 53-man roster to get by with Jimmy G at the helm.
